Message from

the President

In over 120 nations, WAN-IFRA takes up the mantle of empowering, mobilizing, and engaging media to confront the industry's challenges. Our roots and purpose drive us to cultivate sustainable and independent media in emerging and transitional markets, wielding our expertise, networks, and knowledge to champion the fundamental rights and freedoms that underscore a free and independent press.


We collaborate with media entities in 26 transitional markets across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Eurasia. Unfortunately, these regions are grappling with significant challenges that demand urgent attention. Our involvement takes the form of advanced training schemes, capacity-building initiatives, and financial grants, thanks to the generous support of our global members and funding from public and private sources. Our mission permeates every facet of our organization and remains at the core of our pursuits.


For over seven decades, we have held that media freedom is rooted in sustainable, economically independent news businesses. This conviction guides our programs, partnerships, and strategies.


I express my heartfelt gratitude to our international donors, members, and partners for making our programsmes possible worldwide. With WAN-IFRA by your side, we hope you can seize the coming year and grasp the direction of the global industry and how news publishers tackle issues that arise at an ever-accelerating pace. In these times, collective intelligence and action are the most potent tools at our disposal.

In 2024, half of humanity will be called upon to vote for its new rulers. This is unprecedented. In such a decisive year, it is more important than ever to unite and strengthen the role of a free, trustworthy news media through international collaboration to enhance the economic and technological sovereignty and financial sustainability of the press, the ultimate safeguard of its entrepreneurial autonomy and freedom of expression.


For news media, the challenges that lie ahead, whether technological, economic or societal, are all intertwined. In 2024, this interaction will be further accentuated by the rise of large-scale algorithmic models, which adds to the cratering social media referral traffic, the stalled programmatic ad yields, the rise of misinformation campaigns, the pitfalls of news avoidance and declining trust in news, and most dreadfully, increasing threats and crimes against journalists.


The tension between news publishers' business viability and freedom of expression is the essence of what drives WAN-IFRA. The real sense of our mission in our work comes from seeing how the services we deliver to members are connected to a more significant set of outcomes. This is the foundation of our value to members, as this can only be achieved with the profession's collective resolute stance.


I want to thank our members and partners for their support and what we achieved together in 2023, a milestone year for WAN-IFRA. Celebrating our seventy-fifth anniversary stands out as a key highlight, as does growing the number of global publishers we partner with. In 2023, we've driven international collaboration and growth through increased business and media development programmes. Last year, registration for our events and training programmes reached 11,500 news media professionals, including 950 delegates attending the World News Media Congress in Taipei. Eighty new members joined WAN-IFRA. We launched a panel of fourteen expert professionals to guide the news media industry's most pressing priorities. We brought brilliant new capabilities to the market, including WIZONE, our new online media-tech marketplace, delivering even more for members. Eight decades

in the service of innovation in the news

1948

The Founding Year

Publishers representing 12 countries (Belgium, Denmark, Egypt, US, France, UK, Italy, Luxemburg, Norway, Netherlands, Sweden, and Switzerland) join forces to revive the defunct FIADEJ. They founded FIEJ at its inaugural Congress in Paris in June 1948. Johan van de Kieft is elected the first FIEJ President. Claude Bellanger is appointed Secretary-General.

1961

INCA is behind IFRA

IFRA (then INCA) was established in 1961 by Dr Walter M. Matuschke (Axel Springer) and 17 other international publishers to uphold newspaper print technology at its high level and promote commercial developments through the mutual exchange of experience and joint research projects.

In 2023, WAN-IFRA has driven international collaboration and growth through increased business and media development programmes. Registration for our events and training programmes reached 11,500 news media professionals, including 950 delegates attending the World News Media Congress in Taipei. 80 new members joined WAN-IFRA. Table Stakes Europe Empowers your Change Management Capabilities

In 2023, the fourth edition of Table Stakes Europe featured 24 teams. They join a community of more than 55 alumni publishers that have taken part in the previous editions of the performance-driven change initiative in Europe.


Table Stakes Europe, a programme by WAN-IFRA and Google, was be led once again by Table Stakes architect Doug Smith, alongside a team of expert coaches including Valérie Arnould, Alexandra Borchardt, Pepe Cerezo, Martin Fröhlich, Lyndsey Jones and Stéphane Mayoux. Topic experts and fellow publishers from around the globe will also join throughout the programme to help guide the teams through their challenges. The International Community of Practice for Data Experts in the news

The Data Science Expert Group is an international network of professionals with expertise or professional interest in audience analytics in digital news. The group members are data analysts, scientists, engineers, and chief data officers. The group has over 350 active individual members from 30 countries in Europe, Latin and North America, Asia, the Middle East and Africa.


Our goal is to arm practitioners with insights, feedback, and tools built around the priorities of our newsrooms to grow audiences, deepen user engagement, and optimise reader revenues. We share case studies, ideas, resources and connections that help spread good practices.

Data Science Online Forum

We’ve set up a unique online forum to build a community that endures beyond our regular meetings and ignites collaborations and discussions between members. Besides our regular meetups, Slack is our primary communication channel with group members. To get the most out of your participation in the group, it is essential that you actively and openly participate in our Slack forum, whether it is to ask questions, respond to requests or share resources.

AWARDS


WAN-IFRA’s Digital Media Awards is the news media industry’s truly global digital media competition. With this award, we recognise news publishers who have delivered unique and original digital media projects. The winners of our regional digital media awards in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, North America, South Asia and Middle East will determine the 2024 World winners. Independent juries evaluate regional awards. The winners from each region compete against each other for the World Awards, where a different set of juries will evaluate the projects. The most outstanding projects are awarded as winners of the Digital Media Awards Worldwide. The winners will be announced at the World News Media Congress 2024 in Copenhagen, Denmark.

WOMEN IN NEWS LEADERSHIP AWARDS


Exceptional Editors from Botswana, Jordan and the Philippines receive the 2023 WAN-IFRA Women in News Editorial Leadership Award. Emang Mutapati, editor-in-chief of The Voice in Botswana, has been named 2023 Laureate for Africa; Lina Ejeilat, co-founder and editor-in-chief of 7iber in Jordan, has been named 2023 Laureate for the Arab Region; and Glenda Gloria, the executive editor and co-founder of Rappler in The Philippines, has been named 2023 Laureate for Southeast Asia.The 9th annual WIN Editorial Leadership Awards recognise the exemplary contribution of an editor to her newsroom, and under her leadership, her media organisation’s contribution to society. The 2023 Laureates were honoured on WAN-IFRA’s World News Media Congress opening day in Taipei, Taiwan.

World News Media Congress, Taipei 2023

The World News Media Congress 2023 took place in Taipei on June 28-30, bringing together 950+ industry leaders, journalists, and media professionals worldwide. Maria Ressa, CEO of trailblazing Philippines digital news site Rappler, who was awarded the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize for her fearless work on safeguarding freedom of expression, set the tone with a bracing opening address entitled “The Battle for Facts” which set out the threat of misinformation fuelled by the growth of AI. The conference also saw the WAN-IFRA Golden Pen of Freedom awarded to journalists Elahe Mohammadi and Niloofar Hamedi, who have been jailed in Iran.

The participants from around 25 countries met in the “Literaturhaus Frankfurt” under the guiding theme of the WPS 2023: “Business Partnerships in a Sustainable World”. During the event, WAN-IFRA presented in an awarding ceremony the winners of the Print Innovation Awards 2023. Between sessions, participants met with suppliers and discussed the latest developments and interesting innovations. Twenty supplier companies presented their products and systems.

WAN-IFRA and CITEO, with the participation of AGRAPA and UBA, released a new report on the reduction of mineral oils of web offset inks in the circular economy. The report was presented at the World Printers Summit.

The fourth edition of the LATAM Media Leaders Summit returned to face-to-face. 2023 marked a turning point as the business world witnessed unprecedented changes. Media leaders had to understand these forces and harness them to drive innovation and growth in their businesses. More than ever, these challenging times demanded agility, foresight and the audacity to disrupt before being disrupted. That is why the program of the fourth edition of the LatAm Media Leaders Summit 2023 (Bogota, October 9-10) was carefully designed to respond to some of the major issues that concern today's media leaders: innovation, business transformation, leveraging technology and alternative revenue models as levers for growth and guarantors of sustainability.

WOMEN IN NEWS LATAM 2022/2023

Latin American media professionals from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru, and Mexico with executive roles in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Peru participated in a transformational program for women leaders with the support of Google News Initiative. The programme is based on the experience and knowledge acquired in the worldwide WAN-IFRA Women in News Program. During four months, they were accompanied and trained by experts. They created a roadmap to discover and develop their leadership skills, generate new opportunities, and make personal decisions that will enable them to evolve professionally. The second edition of Women in News LatAm was launched in September 2023 with 30 participants and features an intensive four-month programme that combines training and personal career and leadership guidance for media professionals. LATAM DIGITAL BOOTCAMP

The Audience Growth Bootcamp created by WAN-IFRA, with the support of Google News Initiative, generated a learning space for ten media outlets in the region. During this programme, personalized training and mentoring sessions were conducted, and mentoring was aimed at accompanying media in Latin America and the Caribbean. The programme provides ten news publishers in Latin America during 2022 and the first months of 2023 with training, consultation and support in implementing suggestions to optimize and improve their user acquisition and loyalty strategies.

READER REVENUE LAB

Launched in September 2023, The Latin America Reader Revenue

Lab is a collaborative initiative to introduce digital subscription best practices and methodologies operated by publishers worldwide to fifteen Latin American news organizations. During four months, WAN-IFRA, with the support of the Google News Initiative and the international consulting firm Blue Engine Collaborative, developed a personalized training and advisory program for media outlets to implement concrete improvements in their strategy for reader revenue.

World Press Trends data shows media freedom is challenged worldwide

Threats against media are increasing, with methods designed to silence and intimidate the press targeting individual journalists, pressuring editorial independence, and undermining the business operations of news organisations worldwide.

WAN-IFRA’s annual World Press Trends Outlook report features data collected on specific incidents of media freedom violations. We see a broad split, echoed in our data, between developed and developing markets and between online and offline attacks.

At least 66 journalists were killed in 2022, at least 40 of them for reasons directly linked to their work, while estimates suggest a record number – 363 – are currently in jail (a 20% increase over 2021).


Physical intimidation remains an effective means to silence the press, particularly in countries where public institutions are weak or under threat and the rule of law is challenged.


Globally, the rate of physical attacks and murders has risen this year compared to 2021 figures, with the conflict in Ukraine contributing additional casualties – due, in part, to the heightened risks and dangers of war reporting, but also the deliberate targeting of journalists by invading Russian forces. Early PPE shortages, a lack of safety training, and the relative inexperience of many journalists covering the conflict highlight the need for continued investment in this area, and for media organisations to better prepare staff for dangerous assignments.


Impunity around attacks and killings also continues to fuel the rising numbers, with lacklustre investigations and low prosecution rates for those who commit crimes against journalists in hotspot areas ultimately providing scant deterrence. Globally, approximately 80% of attacks against journalists, including murders, remain unsolved. Systemic failings within national justice systems coupled with general financial and resource mobilisation issues across many fragile states and emerging democracies contribute to a weak legal environment.

Golden Pen of Freedom

Since naming its very first recipient 62 years ago, the Golden Pen of Freedom has been turning the spotlight on repressive governments and the journalists and news publishers who fight them the world over. The 2023 Golden Pen of Freedom, the annual press freedom award of the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), has been awarded to Elahe Mohammadi and Niloofar Hamedi while in jail in Iran.

Through direct engagements with local media partners and solid alliances internationally, we aim to raise standards and embed a culture of safety in every newsroom.

With press freedom challenged worldwide, WAN-IFRA Members can be proud of their Association's contribution to improving media safety and advocating on behalf of journalists and newsrooms worldwide. Through direct engagements with local media partners and solid international alliances, we aim to raise standards and embed a safety culture in every newsroom.


We invite media to open themselves up to a comprehensive deep dive across all strands of the safety conversation. Led by expert security and advisory teams with deep local knowledge as well as global security experience, internal resources and skills are first identified before we move on to shaping a more responsive and meaningful engagement that tackles the threats media are facing.


We engage senior newsroom and corporate staff in these conversations, in our training, and through our online seminars and e-learning platforms, recognising that buy-in from decision-makers is critical to instilling new operating procedures and setting the tone for a change in working habits.


We work with several recognised partners with a huge range of expertise, but we are particularly grateful to actively engage in the ACOS (A Culture of Safety) Alliance. ACOS is a unique umbrella organisation that brings together journalists, editors, news organisations, safety experts, trainers, NGOs, funders, innovators, and more to contribute to making that culture a reality in newsrooms across the globe.

Generosity in recent years in support of a free press, wherever threatened, is unprecedented; this industry's solidarity remains deeply humbling. WAN-IFRA’s support to Ukrainian colleagues via our ‘We, the Media’ appeal has seen €300,000 of direct assistance reach local and regional media to ensure a free press continues functioning. As this war grinds on, we need to maintain support.


In 2023, WAN-IFRA again appealed to its members’ generosity and sense of solidarity. We invite WAN-IFRA members to consider two initiatives led by AIRPPU that support colleagues in the regional press across Ukraine.


➽ Anti-corruption reporting project: donation will support the media in reporting on and exposing corruption at the regional and local levels. The belief is simple: Local press should be the watchdogs of the actions of local authorities for the benefit of local people.

➽ Small grants initiative for regional media for socially impactful content production: The media selected by AIRPPU, our local member association, to receive support for their content production, committed to producing at least four social interest stories per month.

EU4 Independent Media Production Support Program 2023


The project EU4IndependentMedia aims to foster resilience and financial sustainability of the independent media sector in Eastern Partnership countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine.


Surviving independent media in the Eastern Partnership struggle with unfair competition practices, starving outlets of revenue, with political interference and a general lack of management skills. To contribute to democratisation and empower citizens in the Eastern Partnership, the project aims to raise the abundance of quality journalism in the independent media sector from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. EU4IM encourages fact-based, gender-inclusive and reliable public interest journalism, exerting its watchdog role. It contributes to boosting the resilience of the media by strengthening its financial sustainability. Our approach is to see if independent media journalists can produce high-quality, engaging content. They will be more competitive in the media market, leading to bigger consumption of reliable information and, by extension, greater societal resilience and government accountability. The programme’s activities include online and face-to-face training, on-the-job and individual mentoring to improve editorial content or enhance management and marketing skills, develop new revenue streams, an increased understanding of audiences, and support necessary technological investments. Furthermore, content production, emergency support, and peer-to-peer networking are also offered, together with access to research studies and reports on media development activities relevant to the region’s stakeholders.


In 2023, The EU-funded project launched an investigative journalism support initiative to make producing engaging and meaningful investigations on hot-button issues easier. Among its other programmes this year, EU4 Independent Media project has launched a series of online courses for journalists and media managers.

Strengthening Media Freedom and the Role of Media in Society across

Sub-Saharan Africa.

2021-2023

The three-year ‘Strengthening Media Freedom ​and the Role of Media in Society Across Sub-Saharan Africa 2021-2023’ programme concluded in December 2023. Results far exceed this initiative's stated aims and desired impacts, as initially outlined in our partnership with ​Denmark's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We have worked with over 2000 media ​professionals from 400 media companies during the 2021-2023 grant period, offering ​approximately 900 hours of training and professional ​development opportunities.

This grant has been critical to completing WAN-IFRA’s ​portfolio of support to media operating in particularly ​challenging environments, further complicated by the ​lasting effects of the global COVID-19 pandemic. Results demonstrate that, via this intervention, ​participating media managers and journalists are more ​resilient to internal and external challenges and have ​updated skills, while media organisations are better ​able to withstand pressures and fulfil their public ​interest role.

Overall, we are confident that our partner-led ​approach of providing complimentary and unique ​editorial capacity building, safety skills development, ​and empowered local advocacy initiatives allows WAN-IFRA to support African ​media partners in a holistic and highy relevant way.


As we bring to a close the current iteration of the ​Strengthening African Media programme, we look ​forward to the opportunity to build on our work in ​partnership with the Ministry and its global objectives, ​to continue supporting independent African media, ​encourage greater press freedom, and the ​consolidation of healthy democracies across the ​continent.

A first of their kind, these pioneering Global Principles provide guidance for the development, deployment, and regulation of AI systems and applications to ensure business opportunities and innovation can thrive within an ethical and accountable framework. Paris Charter for AI and Journalism

The “Paris Charter” is a ten-point framework to guide the use of AI in journalism and media by media outlets and media professionals across the globe. Leadership: WAN-IFRA takes its governance transformation one step further.

Eleven new members, including eight female executives, were elected to serve on WAN-IFRA’s Supervisory Board of Directors at its General Assembly of Members on 29 June 2023. During the same meeting, Fernando de Yarza (Henneo Media) was re-elected President of WAN-IFRA. Meeting during the 74th World News Media Congress in Taipei, the Board of the World Association of News Publishers issued five press freedom resolutions highlighting issues of significant concern for the news media global community.

Celebrating 34 years with WAN-IFRA

In 2024, Mechthild Schimpf leaves WAN-IFRA after thirty-four fulfilling years. She started at Ifra in 1989 as "Head of EDP", overseeing two new editorial systems, global marketing, a new corporate identity, the conversion of the Darmstadt building, and the development of Newsplex Europe. Mechthild was also the first woman in IFRA's management. As Director Marketing and Membership, she then got to know the international network and gradually familiarised herself with the Middle East, where she became Director in charge during her last years with WAN-IFRA.


"I was fascinated and impressed by the region from the very first minute, and that has remained the case till today", said Mechthild in her farewell note to the team in late December 2023. With the guidance of a new Middle East regional Committee chaired by the much regretted Saleh Alhumaidan, a very active member of our Board at the time. With an increasing number of regional sponsors, dynamic marketing and the committee's support, the initially relatively Middle East insignificant conference developed into the annual event of the newspaper people in the Middle East.


After many years working alongside WAN-IFRA members in the Middle East, her reputation in the region is well established. It earned her a lot of respect in the Middle East, shown by many voices on the occasion of my retirement. "Interacting with and talking to each other - not just on paper, but on the ground with people and officials" is critical, she stated in her last address. "Change doesn't happen overnight - it's a long road worth travelling". Mechthild Schimpf's endeavour in the region is emblematic of WAN-IFRA's deep roots of dialogue and intercultural exchange. Our journey is possible only through partnerships and open dialogue. She played an exemplary and challenging role in embodying this purpose.

Innovate Local is a global resource centre for knowledge sharing and networking around the future of sustainable local journalism. “Innovation” does NOT mean doing new things. It means successful, sustainable and new - where old can be done in new ways - journalism and business. “Local” implies news and information within meters and km in a region rather than within a nation – things that people care about because they are close and affect their daily lives. Innovate Local is about sustainable survival and viable growth. AI in the News

Globally, news media faces an uncertain future, compounded by general mistrust, big tech challenges, and misinformation and disinformation at scale. The good news is that across the world, editors, publishers and newsroom leaders are mostly up to the challenge. To help its members meet these challenges, WAN-IFRA has joined forces with Fathm to form a partnership to produce a series of webinars and resources on AI aimed at the global journalism community,

Editor Safety Hub

At a moment of unprecedented threat to press freedom and journalist safety, the ACOS Alliance and WAN-IFRA are developing an online safety training course for editors and news managers to learn the fundamentals of safe commissioning.

The course will create an environment in which safety professionals and newsroom leaders feel empowered to adopt practical safety measures and work towards embedding a culture of safety inside their organisations. It will be available in English and aimed at a global audience, running self-paced for three hours. The resource will include video tutorials and interactive elements such as quizzes and case study exercises. Downloadable tip sheets and links to relevant resources will enhance the learning experience. While this course is aimed at all newsroom editors worldwide, both ACOS alliance and WAN-IFRA would also like this course to resonate with under-resourced editors, particularly.

Fifth edition of Table Stakes Europe features 18 teams.

Eighteen publishers will participate in the fifth edition of the Table Stakes Europe programme. These publishers are now part of a community of more than 80 organisations, from 20 countries, including over 400 individual participants who have taken part in the previous editions and are ambassadors of this transformational methodology.


In this edition, each participating publisher has assembled a multidisciplinary team for a 10-month programme. These teams will undertake specific change management initiatives aimed at addressing significant, self-identified challenges in their digital transformation journey.


One key focus in 2024 will be on diversifying revenue streams under the topic of Average Revenue Per User (ARPU). Another field of activity will be the use of AI across the company, especially in the newsroom.

ClimateXchange (cXc), a global initiative aimed at increasing the impact, reach and sustainability of climate journalism

ClimateXchange is a global journalism initiative that seeks to revolutionize how climate information is disseminated to the public. The platform, launched in October 2023, is partnering with WAN-IFRA. Syli, a non-profit community interest company, spearheads the initiative. It focuses on three complementary activities:

  • contentXchange: A reporting and distribution hub where engaging, high-impact journalism on climate and the just transition can be created or shared for reuse and republication by global news media.
  • regionalXchange: A network of regional hubs where climate reporting is commissioned and cross-border and cross-regional collaborations are seeded.
  • knowledgeXchange: The place where ecosystem change begins, and sustainability solutions for climate crisis newsrooms are developed and refined.

Creating the Global Media Sustainability Initiative

Member states of the United Nations will need to accomplish the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the target date of 2030. Moreover, increased obstacles and cascading crises of the COVID pandemic, continued extreme weather events relating to unabated climate change, wars in Ukraine and Gaza and the subsequent global impacts of all of these on the global economy, energy, transportation, labour, food, and fertilizer supplies are further impeding the already ambitious goals.

The setbacks caused by the recent crises have compounded the urgency of strengthening a robust multi-stakeholder approach that promotes global solidarity, stronger international cooperation, and partnerships to support national, regional and global efforts for ensuring inclusive and sustainable growth.


The news, media and entertainment industries play a critical role with governments, the multilateral system, and private-sector industries in maintaining stability and pursuing sustainability.


The Global Media Sustainability Initiative, as an extension and an activity of the UN SDG Media Compact, is a demonstration of news, media and entertainment executives to commit their companies, reach, resources, and creative talent to advancing awareness, dialogue and participation in addressing the significant challenges of social and sustainable development goals. Additionally, it is a platform for exchanging ideas and best practices of sustainability in the industry’s standard operations and procedures.

In 2024, WAN-IFRA will partner with AIB, the Association for International Broadcasting, to establish the Global Media Sustainability Initiative. Its mission is to leverage the reach and storytelling ability of the world’s print, online, broadcasting, and social media to help engage citizens on sustainability and, in so doing, to accelerate achieving the Sustainable Development Goals to secure the future of the planet.

CHASE, Combatting online HAte Speech by engaging online mEdia

The overall objective of CHASE is to establish and put into practice in Cyprus, Italy, Greece and France, a comprehensive mechanism for online media to effectively detect and respond to cases of online gender-based hate speech. The main activities of CHASE include: 1) Research on the existing legal framework about online hate speech, the existing detection and response mechanisms for cases of online gender-based hate speech, the identification of all different patterns of online gender-based hate speech; 2) Development of an ICT tool detecting online gender-based hate speech; 3) Design of a comprehensive mechanism for countering online gender-based hate speech and capacity building of online media staff & professionals; 4) Drafting, signature and promotion of Code of Conduct for online media platforms on combating online gender-based violence.

NewsArcade - Seriously, play the news!

NewsArcade is the market's only gamified news story format based on real, evolving news. It is a way for media companies to innovate and explore new ways of delivering news. By creating a scalable format supported by development tools and distribution architecture instead of a simple product, we enable each media provider to adapt the solution to their market and its various targets, sustaining their activity. NewsArcade creates the necessary tools and a new format for gamified news that can tell a comprehensive 360-degree news story. The project aims to improve citizen’s skills in news literacy, build critical thinking skills.

Do-Jo main objective is to create a new revenue stream for European public-interest news media and independent journalists through an innovative mechanism to trigger reader donations on a per-article basis, based on collaboration between actors to share revenue, via easy-to-use technological and marketing tools.

TEMS

TEMS will set up and deploy a secure and trusted data space to enable Audiovisual and Media organizations to cooperate by sharing and accessing data in a mutually advantageous manner and in full compliance with the data protection legislation.


By providing the means for enhanced data-based collaboration, TEMS will open new data-driven business opportunities for the media sector to innovate, transform and address existing and new challenges of the digital economy and regain competitiveness in the face of online platforms like the ones commercialized by the five FAANG (Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix, Google).


TEM’s Data Space (DS) will combine a technical infrastructure with governance mechanisms to ensure easy and secure cross-border access to critical datasets in the media sector, facilitating at the same time content co-generation, co-creation and co-distribution as well as transmedia/cross-media narratives. Data interoperability will be a crucial characteristic of the infrastructure to be built in TEMS. The data space deploys trust mechanisms (such as security and privacy by design) and develops data services matching European values, including ethics, equality and diversity.

World News Media Congress

Copenhagen, 27-29 May 2024

The World News Media Congress is the most important annual gathering of news media leaders and has been so since 1948. 900 to 1200 C-level decision-makers from over 70 countries attend the annual World News Media Congress. Merging our top revenue conference, Digital Media Europe – with the annual Congress – WAN-IFRA is bringing you three world summits, two study tours and extra workshops for more inspiration, more international experts, and more case studies; something for all invested in a better future for news media.

The Congress is a global showcase for press freedom with the presentation of the Golden Pen of Freedom Award. The Congress promotes DEI in the news media through its “Women in News” dialogue sessions.

Start-up Team in a Strategy Workshop

The World Media Leaders Summit is for CEOs, publishers, owners and strategists to discuss business models, strategy and future of news media. It brings Ideas, models and solutions for all those invested in building sustainable news organisations.

The World Editors Summit provides a platform for editorial leaders and practitioners to discuss the evolving media landscape, the need for trusted news, and how newsrooms can adapt and operate. It offers perspectives and debates to challenge and inspire.

The World Digital Summit focuses on digital revenue and products. The stream covers revenue diversification, transformation, subscriptions, engagement and advertising issues. It will highlight trends and innovation.

Workshops at Congress are practical and incisive facilitated sessions for members of our various communities to show, share, educate and inspire. The workshops at Congress will dive deep into hot topics and critical issues.

Two Nordic study tours, scheduled for May 20-25 on transformation and May 29-31 on AI, offer opportunities to visit leading newsrooms in the region and get behind-the-scene access and learn from leaders driving subscriptions, newsrooms, social media, audience development, data and analytics.
